Darth Vader was the Sith title given to Anakin Skywalker by Supreme Chancellor Palpatine after he embraced the dark side in 19 BBY after struggling against its grip for several years. Palpatine lured Anakin to the dark side when he promised to protect his wife, Padme Amidala, from the death Skywalker had foreseen for her in his dreams. Skywalker buried all good in himself and, at the command of his new master, led the 501st Legion to the Jedi Temple, killing every single Jedi inside, including the younglings. The personalities became further distinct when Anakin suffered great physical and emotional damage that completely changed his appearance and character. As Darth Vader, Anakin became a powerful asset to the fledgling Empire, serving as an enforcer, Jedi hunter, Supreme Commander of the Imperial Fleet, and general Executor of Palpatine's will.
